Jones Pond is a popular spot for all season fishing, with easy access from the state campground.
Directions to Access Points:
From the intersection of Route 86 and Route 30 in Paul Smiths, follow Route 86 toward Saranac Lake. Continue to Jones Pond Road on the left. Follow here to the north end of Jones Pond at the state access site.
Shoreline Fishing:
Shoreline fishing is not too bad from near the access site. There is also a couple access areas off Jones Pond Road that access a campsite with decent shore fishing.
Boat Access:
Cartop boat access is the easiest, but a small boat with a trolling motor or a small outboard would work too. Jones Pond is very shallow and that is very noticeable as reeds, grass, and lily pads are all over the pond. The western portion of the pond is very shallow with a ton of grass, be sure to use a weedless hook and lures or you will surely get snagged regularly. The most popular fishing spot is the southeast portion of the pond.
Fish Species:
- Northern Pike
- Panfish
- Bullhead
Special Regulations:
Always follow state fishing regulations and be sure to pick up a NYS Freshwater Fishing Guide at your local outfitters or regional NYSDEC office.
