Malone Roads - East

Birding

The landscape around Malone is a bucolic collection of farm fields, wood lots, and hedgerows. For birders, several roads east of town are well worth checking out.

These include Junction, Houndsville, Townline, Goodman, and Moody Roads. Hay fields along these roads may support breeding Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlark, or Savannah Sparrow, while American Kestrels hunt from wires along the roads. Hedgerows may offers species like Yellow and Chestnut-sided Warbler during the summer and raptors like Northern Harrier may be found coursing over the fields spring through fall.

Fall is the best time for raptors and some, like Rough-legged Hawks, may join Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, and Lapland Longspurs to remain in the area during the winter.
