Chateaugay, NY
Chateaugay is full of fun surprises around every turn. In the colder months, visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing, ice fishing and local snowmobile trails. In warmer months, the Chateaugay Lakes, town Recreation Park, and High Falls Campground provide ample opportunities for adventure and family-friendly fun. Throughout the year, the bowling alley and Town Hall Theater offer affordable indoor entertainment.
The Chateaugay Lakes
Locals and visitors alike enjoy many recreational opportunities on Upper and Lower Chateaugay Lake, once home to several historic Adirondack hotels. The two lakes are connected by a narrow passage, the Chateaugay Narrows, which are navigable by boat. 5 miles north of the hamlet of Merrill is a Department of Environmental Conservation boat launch, providing easy access to the lakes, a couple of small islands, two lakeside restaurants, and an infamous sandbar.
The Upper Lake is great for sailing and savoring views of the Adirondack Mountains. It is home to lake and rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, smallmouth bass, loons, and bald eagles.
The Lower Lake is perfect for water sports like waterskiing, wake boarding, and tubing. Rent a cabin on the lake to enjoy multiple days of fun or bring your boat and spend the day on the lake. We love paddling the shoreline of this beautiful body of water because of the views of local wildlife and rolling foothills. Don't miss the July 4 parade of boats!
The Town Hall Theater
This recently renovated, historic theater and event space is both charming and grand, and is home to great concerts and shows all year long. The events lineup can be found on our events page; plan on seeing something special or take in a movie with the family. Their showings are current and immensely popular, including special showings of films suitable for all ages.
Below the Town Hall is the Chateaugay Community Bowling Center, a bowling alley that operates all four seasons. It is also home to a full service bar -- challenge a friend to a few frames and may the best bowler win!
High Falls Park
One of our favorite upstate waterfalls is at the High Falls Campground. After a short hike of just under 0.2 miles, find yourself taking in the astonishing sight of this 120 foot waterfall. The waterfall creates a lovely North Country oasis. It is a perfect spot for having a picnic or taking a quick and refreshing dip in the nearby swimming hole.
Visitors can enjoy local camping options at the High Falls Campground. Located on the scenic Chateaugay River, the campground features great fishing, miniature golf, baseball diamond, snack bar and more. Make sure to see the fireworks show that the park puts on for the Fourth of July holiday.
