Four Things You Didn't Already Know About The Malone Golf Club

FOUR THINGS YOU DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THE MALONE GOLF CLUB

The Malone Golf Club is well-known around the area, and its popularity continues to grow as travelers discover its charm.

It stands out for having 36 holes of Robert Trent Jones golfing that leaves every member and guest wanting more. The club is famous for its 4.5-star rating by Golf Digest, and its commitment to service that ranks better than par. However, there are some things about the club that a lot of people don't know -- until now!

1 - The dedicated bridge

The hole number 10 bridge of the East Course was designed to look similar to the bridge at St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland -- the course that's said to be "the home of golf."  Regionally, the Malone Golf Club is said to be the home of golf for many of our local residents and even some visitors.

This foot bridge was dedicated to a person the course felt deserved a high amount of recognition. Barry Puopore was a long-time member and friend to the Malone Golf Club. He was a dedicated golfer that deserved to have this beautiful bridge dedicated to him. When you visit the club and make it to hole number 10 East, don't be afraid to play the ball just a bit left and take a stroll over this beautifully crafted bridge -- just like the one at Scotland's home of golf.

2 - Famous connections

There are quite a few celebrity connections to our club here in Malone.

As the story goes, the one and only Babe Ruth -- star player for the New York Yankees and all-around baseball legend -- loved traveling to our beautiful neck of the woods. It also turns out that he really liked to golf. The original nine holes of the Malone Golf Club were dedicated by Ruth, who "opened" the first nine holes in 1939.

It is not uncommon to spot players from the Montreal Canadiens hockey team on our greens. It's an easy drive across the border, so it's no wonder they make the short trip for a great round or two of golf. And, with Canadian Cash At Par Packages, who could blame them for heading south?

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't share our own "local boy makes good" story. One of our favorite celebrities is long-time Malone resident, Derek Sprague. Born and raised here, Derek became the club's head golf professional early in his life. Through his hard work and reputation for running one of the best clubs in the state, Derek eventually became the president of the PGA of America, a position that put him near the top of the American golf world. We are proud to call him one of our own.

3 - The 19th Hole is the 2nd

If you've ever visited the Malone Golf Club, you know that the clubhouse, which boasts beautiful locker rooms, a modern pro shop, a great restaurant, and relaxing lounge, is both accommodating and lovely. What a lot of folks don't know is that this is the second clubhouse that the Malone Golf Club has featured throughout its history .

In 2000, the original clubhouse was demolished to make room for the one that we have now. The new one finished its construction in 2001 and was ready for opening day. If you eat in The Grille Room, the club's restaurant, be sure to admire the fireplace in the dining room. It was built with materials from the original fireplace from the original clubhouse. History is everywhere in Malone!

4 - How eventful

Great golf isn't the only component that the Malone Golf Club does well. They also host some great events -- and you can host yours here, too!

From tournament banquets hosted by the club to private weddings, proms, parties, and more, the club is the ideal spot to make memories. The event and conference space is found upstairs and adjacent to the restaurant. Your crew can enjoy delicious dining, a dance floor that you decide where to place, and a full-service bar; all catered to your liking with some of the best service in the area.
